इसे कैसे बनाएं

चरण 1 of 3

Roast the Makhana

⏱ 0–10 min

Heat a wide, heavy-bottomed pan over low-medium heat. Add the fox nuts and dry-roast, stirring constantly, until they feel light and crisp to the touch — about 8 to 10 minutes. There should be no moisture left, and they will turn lightly golden rather than brown.

Remove from heat and allow to cool completely on a wide plate before the next step. If you prefer a richer flavour, add a teaspoon of ghee at this stage and toss to coat before roasting — this gives the traditional prasad aroma beloved at Navratri pooja tables across North India.

Cool completely before combining with the dates and nuts, as warmth will cause the date paste to soften unevenly.
💡 विशेष सुझाव Test a makhana by pressing it between your fingers: it should snap cleanly with no give. Under-roasted makhana will not hold its shape in energy balls.

चरण 2 of 3

Blend the Dates and Dry Fruits

⏱ 10–15 min

In a food processor or strong blender, combine the pitted dates, cashews, and almonds. Process for 30 to 45 seconds until the mixture clumps into a rough paste — it should hold its shape when pressed between your fingers. Add a small splash of water (no more than 1 teaspoon) only if the mixture is too dry to blend.

Avoid over-processing: a slightly textured mixture gives the energy balls a pleasant bite and a more artisanal appearance. Once blended, transfer the paste to a wide bowl. Add the cooled roasted makhana, raisins, and freshly ground cardamom. Mix gently with your hands or a wooden spoon until everything is evenly combined and the makhana is coated.
💡 विशेष सुझाव Medjoul dates are the right choice here — their natural moisture acts as a binder without any added sweetener. Ensure every stone is removed before blending to protect your food processor.

चरण 3 of 3

Shape and Chill

⏱ 15–20 min

With slightly damp hands, take approximately 2 tablespoons of the mixture and roll into a smooth, firm ball. Press firmly as you roll — the warmth of your hands helps the mixture bind together. Repeat until all the mixture is shaped; a standard batch yields 18 to 22 balls depending on size.

For Navratri, a light dusting of sendha namak (rock salt) over each ball adds a subtle contrast that enhances the sweetness — this is entirely optional but traditional in many North Indian households during the vrat.

Arrange the energy balls on a tray lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes before serving. This sets their shape and makes them easier to handle. They keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days, making them ideal for preparing a day ahead of the fast.
💡 विशेष सुझाव If the mixture is crumbling, your dates may not have been soft enough. Soak them in warm water for 5 minutes, drain well, and blend again. The natural moisture from the dates is the only binder needed — no jaggery or sugar syrup required.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Can we eat dry fruits during Navratri fasting?

Yes, dry fruits are among the most nourishing foods to consume during Navratri fasting. Makhana, almonds, dates, cashews, and raisins are all satvik (pure) foods traditionally permitted during vrat. They provide concentrated energy and nutrients without breaking the fast. Almonds, makhana, and dates each deliver concentrated nutrients — Vitamin E, magnesium, and potassium — without bulk, which may help sustain energy across the nine days of the fast.

Which dry fruits suit Navratri fasting?

For Navratri fasting, makhana, almonds, Medjoul dates, cashews, and raisins are among the most well-suited choices — satvik, nutrient-dense, and traditionally easy on the digestive system during the vrat. Makhana brings light, digestible energy; almonds contribute Vitamin E and healthy fats; Medjoul dates offer natural sweetness and potassium; cashews are a source of magnesium; and raisins bring iron. Together, they cover a wide nutritional range and can be eaten as a snack, made into energy balls, or added to milk for a nourishing fasting meal.

How much dry fruits can I eat during Navratri fasting?

A small handful (30 to 40g) of mixed dry fruits per sitting is a good starting point during Navratri fasting. This may provide steady energy without overloading the digestive system, which can be more sensitive during fasting periods. You may eat 2 to 3 such servings spread through the day. Nutrient absorption may improve when consumed with a small amount of warm milk or water.

Can makhana be eaten during Navratri?

Yes, makhana (fox nuts or phool makhana) is one of the most popular foods consumed during Navratri. It is satvik and has been a traditional fasting food across North India for generations. Makhana may be dry-roasted with a pinch of rock salt and cardamom for a simple vrat snack, or blended into energy balls with dates and nuts as in this recipe. Makhana’s appeal as a fasting food lies in its low fat content and starch that is traditionally considered gentle on the digestive system.

Are dates good for energy during Navratri fasting?

Dates are a well-known source of natural energy during Navratri fasting. They contain potassium (696 mg per 100g, per USDA FDC #168191) and natural sugars that may help support stable energy levels during the fast. Their fibre content may support digestion even during fasting periods. Medjoul and seedless kajoor dates are both popular choices during Navratri across Indian households.
